I’ve relaunched SF Edits, the bot that watches for edits to Wikipedia articles on politically important topics in San Francisco. Originally, I’d launched it on Twitter, but now it’s on Bluesky and Mastodon.
Here’s how it works:
- The code listens to a live stream of all Wikipedia edits on IRC.
- When there’s an edit to any of the articles that it’s watching, it posts the diff, along with a screenshot showing the before and after, to both social networks.
- If the editor was a logged in Wikipedia user, then it includes their username in the post. If not, then it just shows the editor’s IP address.
The code was originally forked from @congressedits. That account was shut down by Twitter in 2018. I’ve always been interested in creating something similar for SF politics, but as far as I know, no local government agencies here have dedicated IP ranges. So instead of posting anonymous edits, my code posts all edits, but watches specific articles.
